The most important seasonal point is that Charyn Canyon and the Tien Shan lakes aren't open on the same schedule. The canyon, down on the steppe, is reachable for much of the year, while the higher mountain lakes and their access roads are really only comfortable from roughly late spring through early autumn, when the passes are clear and the water is at its most vivid. That's why winter tours from Almaty tend to focus on the canyon alone — so the 'best time' depends heavily on whether you want the lakes in the mix.
Summer: warm, green and busy
The southern-hemisphere phrasing doesn't apply here — this is the Northern Hemisphere, and summer runs roughly June to August, the peak season for the full canyon-and-lakes loop. The lake roads are open, the water is at its bluest, and the forests are green, but it's also the busiest time and the canyon can get genuinely hot, with little shade on the walk. If you travel in summer, favour an early start and carry more water than feels necessary for the exposed gorge.
Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
For many travellers late spring (May to early June) and early autumn (September) are the most rewarding windows: the canyon is cooler and more walkable, the crowds thinner, and in autumn the spruce and surrounding foliage add colour to the lakes. The trade-off is that early or late in the season, mountain weather and road conditions are less predictable, so it's worth confirming with the tour that the lakes leg is actually running on your date rather than assuming it is.
Winter: canyon only, quiet and stark
In winter the mountain lakes and their roads are usually out of reach, and tours that run tend to visit the canyon alone. The upside is a dramatic, near-empty gorge, sometimes dusted with snow against the red rock; the downsides are short daylight, cold, and the fact that you're seeing only part of what the classic trip offers. It's a real option if the canyon is what you came for, but not the season to expect the sunken forest of Kaindy.
Plan around one long day either way
Whatever the season, the trip is a long day out of Almaty, so weather planning matters. Check the forecast for both the steppe and the mountains before you go, since they can differ sharply, and keep your booking flexible: the listings generally offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which is genuinely useful when a mountain road or a sudden storm can change what's sensible to attempt on a given date.
